    The Institute of Child Health (ICH) from its inception in the 1960 was established to (i) undertake teaching of medical graduates in the postgraduate phase and teaching of other medical and auxiliary medical staff at various phases of their training; (ii) conduct general and child-focused research and (iii) provide services in the area of Primary Health Care particularly for children and health education of mothers.
  • Services

    The Institute through its infant/ well-child clinic provides Promotive, Preventive, Curative and Rehabilitative medical services for children.  The ICH also boasts of a laboratory which provides comprehensive services.

  • Programmes

    ICH runs the following academic programmes: Master of Public Health (MPH) in Child and Adolescent Health; Masters of Science (MSc) programme in Public Health Biotechnology; Doctoral programmes in Child and Adolescent Health and Public Health Biotechnology with the following areas of specialization:

    1. Social aspect of Child health
    2. Adolescent health
    3. Molecular/Genetic Epidemiology of diseases
    4. Immunogenetics/Immuno-epidemiology

    Candidates are admitted through the postgraduate School, University of Ibadan.

Expertise & Prospects Into Cutting-Edge Research

The Institute has experienced personnel and is also well positioned within the Institution for collaborations with International Centres with state-of-the-art tools and experts. Our main goal is to build capacity in the areas of bioethics, community-based research, molecular genetics and the interface between research, policy and public health. This will be accomplished through a mix of research, training, collaboration and improving infrastructural support for research.

Our Courses

MPH Child and Adolescent Health


The Master of Public Health (MPH) is one of the most highly regarded child and adolescent health programmes in Africa. It is designed for individuals with a graduate degree, the program can be completed by full-time students in 18 – 24 months.

Our training focuses on Child and Adolescents public health skills development (reproductive health, infant/perinatal and child health, adolescent health, social disparities, child health policy and family systems). Candidates for admission into the MPH (Child and Adolescent Health) shall be holders of medical or paramedical degrees.

MSc Public Health Biotechnology

We offer this course to provide students with with understanding of the mechanisms of disease at the molecular level.


We offer 3-year PhD programmes with focus on the following areas:

  • PhD Child Health (general)
  • PhD Adolescent Health
  • PhD Social Aspects of Child Health
  • PhD Public Health Biotechnology
